100 Million HPE LTO Ultrium Data Cartridges – and counting
Not many people know that the original R&D program behind HPE LTO (Linear Tape-Open) Ultrium tape was called "Discovery." It's a great name for a technology whose mission has always been to push the boundaries of data protection, since it was first released in the Spring of 2000*.
Back in 2000, nobody had heard of the digital universe, but 100 million HPE LTO cartridges later, we have more files than stars in the sky, metaphorically speaking: a galaxy of information with the power to illuminate how we live and work.
For almost twenty years, HPE has been evolving—and has been at the forefront of—LTO tape storage innovation:
- Introducing Write Once Read Many (WORM) technology with LTO-3
- Developing Linear Tape File System (LTFS) in LTO-4 to make HPE LTO as simple and easy to use as disk
- Providing powerful encryption for enhanced security with LTO-5
- Delivering capacities of up to 30 terabytes for the latest HPE LTO-8 data cartridges
And all of these technologies are underpinned by HPE’s unique quality standards for HPE LTO Ultrium data cartridge reliability.
As part of the world’s most intelligent storage portfolio, HPE StoreEver LTO tape continues to facilitate progress and discover new paths for transforming your business and unlocking the full potential of your data.
So here's to the next 100 million—and continued leadership and innovation from HPE!
